Class 3: Mrs Westlake & Mrs Matthews

African Safari Sunsets

Helo bawb!

Sut mae? How are you all? How exciting it was for many of you to come back to school this week! Mrs Mullett said you were all very enthusiastic about your return and seeing your friends again, and that you worked extremely hard. Many of you who weren't able to come to school have emailed me with your work, and you are also working very hard. Da iawn, bawb. I am very proud of you all. smileyyes

This week we are continuing with our theme of Africa. We will find out who Jane Goodall is in our comprehension task. Other Literacy tasks include writing a fable in the style of Aesop and learning about collective nouns (school-based task). In Maths we go on a South African Road Trip as we tackle various activities to solve a puzzle. We are also investigating the written division method (also school-based). We are looking at African patterns in Art and are choosing our own part of Africa to create a brochure for in Humanities. There are several interesting Purple Mash to-dos, including becoming a safari guide

As per last week, activities in red are to be done in school first of all - but why not revise them at home afterwards?

A big Diolch yn Fawr Iawn goes to all parents and carers for all your support throughout the year and especially during the past few months. We very much appreciate the hard work which has been done at home. Well done, everyone!

In order to give pupils the opportunity to undertake any work that they haven’t already completed over the past few months and give them the opportunity to choose from the activities on the ‘Additional Resources’ page, work will not be planned for the last week of this academic year. During this week and throughout the summer holidays we would like to encourage pupils to continue to practise their reading by making use of the interesting and varied resources available on ‘Hwb’ and ‘Purple Mash’. In Serial Mash there is a wealth of books available, all with quizzes and activities to do as follow-up work.

Enjoy the summer holiday, everyone and we look forward to seeing you all in September.

Diolch yn fawr,

Mrs Westlake, Mrs Matthews and Mrs Mullett winklaughsmiley

Hello Class 3!

How are you all? I am sure that lots of you are looking forward to coming back to school very soon. Do make sure that you see Mrs Kirkman's video and that you take the wonderful virtual tour of our school! It's great!

Mrs Mullett is really looking forward to seeing those of you who are returning next week. She has lots of exciting activities to do with you all. We have a brand new theme until the end of term - Africa! We will be going on an African safari, and we're going to be thinking about lots of animals that live in Africa. We have a map-work tutorial showing you a good way of learning where the countries of Africa are. We are looking at fractions in Maths, plus some number work revision. In English we have an Elephants comprehension and African animal shape poems to write. We can't wait to read them! You may like to make an African necklace and even make some African animals and a safari jeep! Wow!

Thank you to all of you who sent in work this week. Many of you loved the cinquain poetry and we received cinquains on all sorts of topics - football, trees, my dog, school, Barbie, to name but a few! Da iawn, bawb!

This week some of the planning is highlighted in red. These are activities that Mrs Mullett will cover with you in school, so please do not do these activities at home until you have had your day in school.

Although I will not be in school I am nevertheless working as usual from home, so please email me with your work or any queries and you know I will get back to you promptly. We love to hear all your news and to see what you've been up to.

Have a wonderful week,

Best wishes,

Hello Class 3!

How are you all? It is lovely to hear from you by email and to read your messages on Purple Mash. Thank you for sending in your work to us. It is great to see what you are all up to!

We have a good variety of things on offer this week. Those of you who are still finishing your Enchanted Wood stories may like to continue with this, thinking of how to present your story. You could send us a video of you reading your story. Or send us photographs of your work, or a Word or PowerPoint document. We also have some Cinquain poetry to explore. What will your cinquain be about?

We have an environmental focus this week as we consider plastic and its pros and cons (advantages and disadvantages). Read and complete the comprehension and make a poster about plastic pollution.

In Maths we are using inverse operations to help us to solve problems. We also have some Purple Mash Time to-dos to keep your time skills sharp. There are also some bar charts to draw. Remember to leave a gap between the bars when you draw them on your bar chart.

Don't forget the lovely book, 'Coming back to school in a Bubble', which is a wonderful way to prepare you for your return to school.

Remember to email us with any work, any queries or just to say hello!

Best wishes,

Hello Class 3,

Well another week has gone by already. We hope you have all had a lovely long weekend of fun and laughter in the sun with your families. We wonder how many of you joined in with the VE day celebrations on Friday?

It has been lovely to keep in touch with so many of you, either via email or through Purple Mash activities. We love reading your emails and seeing examples of your work or pictures. Next week we have set you all a task to try to send us a short email and attach a couple of pictures or images of your work and activities. But, don’t worry if you can’t share your work with us, keep it safe and you can save it all for when we meet again.

Hope you enjoy this week’s tasks.

Have fun and take good care.

Subtraction

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zm982hv/articles/zbhfy9q

Note: The clips refer to units as 'ones' but in school we use the term units. Also, when subtracting they refer to 'borrowing' from the next column, but we say 'exchanging' as you exchange one ten for 10 units, or one hundred for 10 tens, etc.

Helo bawb!

We hope you had a lovely week last week, and a restful weekend. We are hoping to see a little less rain this week, and a lot more sun!

Are you ready for some more exciting activities? We have lots to so this week, including looking at story settings, revising column addition and subtraction, some lovely Thrive activities and an art tutorial from Rhiannon Art. Of course, you may wish to continue working on activities from previous weeks as well.

Helo bawb! Hello everyone!

We hope you've had a lovely Easter holiday. Wasn't the sunshine glorious? Fingers crossed we'll see some more sunshine soon.

We have some exciting activities for you at the start of the Summer term. We will be posting ideas, activities and work on the Class 3 page on a weekly basis. There will be activities to enable pupils to engage in a range of activities, to develop their skills and to accept a challenge.

Our new theme this term is Where I Live: A study of _____. This is an exciting topic where children explore the geography and history of their local area. We also link it with our Science study of Pond Life. Please read the accompanying Word document which explains more about it.

There is a weekly overview sheet that explains the activities for your child for the week. All the sheets/links needed are posted below.

Some of the activities will be labelled A, B and C.

“A” activities/sheets will be a springboard for a new concept, “B” activities will follow on from this and “C” will provide a challenge or extended work. Pupils may begin with A and then move to B if/when they are ready, and some will begin with B and move to C. Some pupils may need to practise similar questions from “A” or “B” a few times before they are ready to face the “C” challenge work.  Please support your child with any new concepts/activities that may require some adult explanation.

The Additional Resources section is updated regularly and some activities in this section may support your child with various skills whilst they are learning at home.

It is important that the children enjoy the activities – please adapt activities with any resources/ideas that you may have to support your child/children. If your child does not enjoy a specific activity, move on to a different task and you can return to it at a different time.

Thank you all for your continued support during an unprecedented time for us all – children and adults alike. What is important to us at Creigiau Primary School is that you are happy, well and safe.

Take good care of yourselves and each other. We look forward to seeing you sometime soon and hearing about your adventures.

Best wishes,

Mrs Westlake and Mrs Matthews

Personal Project: Roman Invasion!

Bore da!

We hope you are all managing to stay safe and well. We have lots of creative, fun things you can do to continue your learning at home while school is closed.

  1. Cross-curricular theme work: Produce a personal project on the subject of the Romans. See the Word document which explains all about it. You could choose 1 aspect of the Romans to add to your project each day, or you could aim to produce a page or two a day. How about starting a bigger task too, such as a large poster (you could join smaller pieces of paper together, or use opened-out cereal boxes to stick work on)? Or you could begin a Roman mosaic and cut out all the little tiles from (clean) packaging that you no longer need.
  2. Maths: Do some cooking with an adult. Find the mass of (ie 'weigh') the ingredients you need in grams. Maybe you could take photographs of the recipe and of you cooking it and finally the finished product. Produce a Pic Collage, PowerPoint or written page showing the process and the Maths you used! You could also create a 3D model of a Roman building to accompany your project. Measure the buildings, and note what sort of 3D shapes you have used. How many vertices, edges and faces do the shapes have?
  3. Literacy: Choose a book you have at home to read. It may be one by Roald Dahl or David Walliams or another favourite author. Write a character study of your favourite character, describing them and drawing/painting your own picture of them. Then write your own story about that character! Plan your story first so it has a beginning, middle and end. Remember to use paragraphs and include speech with speech marks.

We will upload lots of other ideas as well as the ones above. Try to have a daily routine, eg some Maths and Literacy in the morning and theme work in the afternoon. Get fresh air in the garden and ask if you can help with chores around the home too.

Keep well and have fun learning,

Mrs Westlake and Mrs Matthews

Helo bawb! Hello, everyone!

Well done to everyone for a wonderful class assembly last week. The children all performed excellently and we were extremely proud of them all. Thank you also for your generosity in donating money to the class fund. We will let you know in due course how we will spend the money.

We are looking forward to our school Eisteddfod on Friday 28th February. We are sure you are all busy learning the poem Teigr yn y Gegin. Our House Choir song this year will be Yr Anthem Genedlaethol - the National Anthem, so we will be match-ready by the time our Eisteddfod comes round!

We are enjoying some Welsh activities during our reading sessions. We have an individual Welsh reading session and also an ipad session where children enjoy the Welsh second language apps Campau Cosmig (Cosmic Capers) and Codi Hwyl (Having Fun - a pirate app).

Remember, you can use your Purple Mash accounts at any time at home. Apps do not have to be set as 'To-dos' in order for you to use them. Ones we have used in school include Frank's Clever Window Again (direct speech), Table Toons and the Celtic/Iron Age apps. Of course, you are free to explore any of the apps you see in your account at home.

Hwyl am y tro, Bye for now,

Mrs Westlake and Mrs Matthews

Hello!

The pupils have brought home their homework - spelling, a poster to create and the Eisteddfod 2020 Recitation piece.

We will learn the piece together next week.

Penwythnos hapus! Have a lovely weekend.

Our class trip to 'We The Curious'

We had a fabulous day learning about our digestive system when we visited, 'We The Curious', in Bristol, for our first class trip in year 3! We had a lovely picnic lunch with friends and then we were able to explore and discover how our wonderful bodies work! What fun! Come and take a look at some of the exciting things we were able to do...

Class 3 Termly Overview

Welcome to Class 3 and Key Stage 2!

Croeso i Class 3 a Chyfnod Allweddol 2!

It is very exciting that you are all in Key Stage 2 at last!  You are having a busy first week, finding your seats, your trays and your coat pegs and learning the new routine. You are all enjoying yourselves and are working very hard. Da iawn, bawb - well done, everyone!

Here are some things to remember as the new term gets under way.

  • Bring your reading books, reading record books and pencil case to school EVERY day.

  • Read every day, at home as well as in school. Write in your reading record book yourself to show you have read. Tick off your scheme books on your reading chart if you have one. When you read to an adult (at least once a week at home), ask them to write in your reading record book too.
  • Outdoor PE is on Tuesday and indoor PE is on Thursday. Bring your PE kit in every Monday and take it home every Friday.
  • The Daily Mile happens every day - walking or running for 15 minutes. Make sure you bring a coat or pac-a-mac in case it is wet.
  • Homework will be sent home on Friday and is to be returned the following Tuesday.
  • Our theme for the term is The Human Body. What fascinating Body facts can you find out to share with the class?
  • We have learnt about the Charter for the Rights of the Child this week. What can you share with people at home about this? Which rights do we think are most important for us in our school?
  • We are focusing on our multiplication tables this term. Revise the 2x, 5x and 10x tables and begin learning your 3x table.
  • We are learning Welsh phrases to use every day. Teach Ga i ddiod? or Beth sy'n bod? to someone at home.

Keep up the good work! Gweithiwch yn galed! :)
